Maintaining Your Garbage Disposal
Q: What is the best way to maintain a garbage disposal?
A: Garbage disposals are important tool in our kitchens. When food particles become trapped in the corners and nooks of the disposal, bacteria grows. By cleaning the disposal weekly you can minimize bacteria and prevent unpleasant odors.
To clean the disposal, simply pour one half cup of baking soda into the garbage disposal followed up by one cup of white vinegar. These must be put in separately. Allow the two ingredients to “fizz” for a few minutes while you boil water in a medium size pan. Once the water reaches a boil, carefully pour it into the disposal.
To sharpen the blades of your disposal, fill it half way with ice cubes, run cold water (at full pressure) and turn the disposal on. Grinding the ice will sharpen the blades. For a nice, fresh scent, pout some citrus peels (orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit) with the ice cubes.
